Like that shiny winning Golden Ticket hidden in millions of chocolate bars, Apple's App Store revealed a winner of it's own.
The one billionth application was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, a thirteen year old Weston, Connecticut boy who became the grand prize winner in Apple's app countdown contest. The free application, Bump, has only been available from the App Store for roughly thirty-days. Bump Technologies is thinking big for Bump and the technology used by the app. A paid version is being developed with new abilities and other options.
The Bump app helps the user exchange contact information by "bumping" iPod or iPhone info with another user. To be exact, Bump exchanges contact data between two wireless devices over any type of mobile portal. Both users access Bump on their phones and "bump" their hands together. Simply, when two devices bump, they send the information to the server, this server then matches the bump to another phone. Users are then asked if they want to swap contact info., which it then saves the new contact information in each user's address book.
With the release of iPhone OS Version 3.0, the Apple App Store should raise its' popularity. The new version will allow more than 1k app programming interfaces, push notify, peer connect, and more.
And what about that lucky boy with the so called, "Golden Ticket?" Mr. Mulcahey may have downloaded the one billionth FREE app, but he did not walk away empty handed. Apple gave Mulcahey a $10,000 iTunes gift card, a MacBook Pro, a Time Capsule and an iPod touch.
